Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 cohabitation on the same subnet

I installed a new Windows 2008 SBS for a client and to use the old Windows 2003 server as backup server (since it’s working fine). But my Windows 2003 keeps shutting down without any reason and no trace on the logs. Even I did a dcpromo and removed Active Directory Domain Services and every service was going with.

I was looking to stop any other SBCore services that was left and finally  a solution was proposed to my by the tech support of SBS 2003

Download Process Explorer here execute and left button on the process called sbscrexe.exe (Service Licences SBS) and chose Suspend and not kill or other option because you will not be able to accomplish the following instructions. Run regedit and browse on the following hive / key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SBCore, right click and give permissions to the “Administrator” group on the local machine full access and replace the permissions on child’s nodes Refresh and you will see the new entries. Edit “Start and change it form 2 to 4.  After just deny the permission to everyone on the C:\WINDOWS\system32\sbscrexe.exe. Now you can kill the task sbscrexe.exe and if it doesn’t restarts you have done it. In order to verify please check if the service “SBS Core Services is stopped and disabled.
